Functional Skills in Maths

Learn Direct’s maths qualifications will help you gain the essential skills you need to solve number problems easily at work and at home, and you’ll get a qualification too.

You’ll cover subjects like: subtraction, addition, multiplication and division, fractions and decimals, shapes and space, percentages, measurements, handling data and money.

You can also do different sized qualifications at each level, depending on your learning needs. This could mean your qualification might only need to cover a few subjects like percentages or data. Or you may need to focus on a broader range of maths subjects.

How will I learn?

You will need to enrol for your qualification through a Learn Direct centre – this means that you will receive face-to-face support from friendly staff. You can continue to work anywhere you have an internet connection. During your learning you will have regular progress reviews to make sure you’re on track.

The maths awards are assessed through coursework and your work will be assessed by City and Guilds to gain a qualification.

Alternatively, if you take the functional skills route, you will need to take an exam. Your tutor will help you with practice test activities to make sure you’re prepared to pass your test. Tests are taken when you’re ready, so you don’t have to wait for a specific date.

How long will it take?

Learn Direct are flexible so it depends on your needs and circumstances. On average, it takes around three months to gain a maths qualification but they will agree a target and date with you when you start.
